Discovered the carrot museum today , an online museum devoted to the humble carrot . According to them carrots were originally purple or red, with a thin root. The species did not turn orange until the 1500's when Dutch growers used a mutant yellow carrot seed from North Africa to develop a carrot in the colour of the House of Orange, the Dutch Royal Family.

In Loretta Lux's gently surreal portraits of children, nothing is quite what it seems.

The German photographer Loretta Lux does not have a motherly eye. Her subjects are chosen, she says, "because children are very genuine; they don’t wear masks".

Trained as a painter, Lux builds up images in layers. She takes hundreds of photographs of her models in vintage clothing against a white backdrop before transposing them onto a background that she has photographed or painted. Then she tinkers digitally, altering the child's expression and the image's hues to achieve an eerie pastel perfection - a process of subtle modification which can take several months.

{Swirly Easter Cupcakes }

These cupcakes make memorable easter party treats. Chilling the bowl beforehand helps the cream whip up with the most volume.

to make 30
3 pints ice cream, any flavor
5 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
Sprinkles, for decorating

1. Place 30 paper baking cups on two baking sheets. Set aside. Slice each cake layer in half horizontally, making a total of four layers.
2. Using a 2 1/4-inch-round cookie cutter, cut 30 rounds from cake layers. Place a round in each baking cup. Using a 2-inch ice-cream scoop, place one scoop ice cream on each cake round. Transfer baking sheets to freezer for 20 minutes. Chill a medium mixing bowl.
3. Place heavy cream and confectioners’ sugar in the chilled bowl. Whip until soft peaks form. Fit a 16-inch pastry bag with a coupler. Fill pastry bag with whipped cream. Starting at the perimeter of a baking cup, pipe a spiral of whipped cream, covering the ice cream. Repeat with remaining cupcakes. Return to freezer, and chill until hard, about 45 minutes. Decorate with sprinkles, and serve.
ps: {tips from the top} : give them very swirly tops like Martha Stewart would !

“ Jacques Tati is one of the great comic icons of French cinema, a Gallic equivalent of Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, whose works as director, writer, and actor are regarded fondly by audiences as well as harder-to-please critics.

Sophia Maria Westendorp was born in Zaltbommel on 17 December 1916…

Perhaps Holland's greatest illustrator, Fiep Westendorp quirky, vibrant drawings spent half a century in the center of mainstream Dutch cultural life. She started out as a newspaper illustrator, but made her name drawing and painting a series of homespun books for young people by Annie M.G. Schmidt.

Fiep and Annie's friendship began the moment they met in Café Scheltema…

Of all the books Fiep Westendorp has illustrated, only a handful were written by Annie M.G. Schmidt. Yet the two women's work is inextricably linked. Fiep's individual and often humorous drawings complement Annie's writing perfectly.

Their collaboration lasted more than forty years and began in 1952 on the children's page of the newspaper Het Parool with the adventures of Yip and Yannika. The books came later.

Fiep's illustrations helped make Tow-Truck Pluck and Odette classics of Dutch children's literature. Her work is immediately recognizable to all. Both text and illustration have proven timeless.

Fifty years on, Fiep and Annie are still the twin mothers of the Netherlands' most famous and most popular pre-schoolers: Jip and Janneke.
Fiep Westendorp died, after a short illness, on 3 February 2004, at the age of 87.

Fiep Westendorp transferred the intellectual property rights of her entire oeuvre to a foundation: the Stichting Fiep Westendorp.

The objectives of this non-commercial foundation are:- the annual award of a grant to a young and promising illustrator, in order to enable him or her to execute a special project, and– the support of projects with the aim of improving the linguistic and cultural development of children by visual or audiovisual means.

{1903–76} French poet, novelist, and publisher - a precursor of postmodernism. Raymond Queneau was an advocate of surrealism during the middle and late 1920s. He used in his novels and poems colloquial speech and phonetic spellings.
One of Queneau's main delights is playing with language and Zazie is exemplary, employing phonetic spelling and phraseology. The story's first word is "Doukipudonktan?" - a compression of D'ou qu'ils puent donc tant? ("How canaystinksotho?")

Published in 1959, Zazie dans le Métro won the Prix de l'humour noir. The novel was adapted for the screen by Louis Malle in 1960, at the height of the Nouvelle Vague movement in French film.
In this imaginative adaptation of Queneau’s novel , ten-year-old Zazie is brought to Paris to stay with her uncle Gabriel.
Zazie’s one desire is to ride on the Métro, but it is immobilized by a strike. Malle is faithful to Raymond Queneau novel: the episodes and dialogue are intact, with visual illustrations added when required, often to considerable effect.

Again Queneau writes in a semiserious way and uses widely dialogue, meaningless everyday language, swearwords, and phonetic spelling - Zazie drinks "cacocalos" and wears "bloudjinnzes".

When her mother comes to collect her, she asks
- "did you see the métro?"
- "No"
- "What did you do, then?"
- "I grew up."

The JCB Song is about a five year old little boy riding in his dad's JCB digger - an uplifting and jolly song (thanks lisa !).
It was written by 27-year-old Luke Concannon and tells how great he felt when he was five and his builder dad let him ride around in a JCB when he hould have been at school. Luke struggled in his studies because of dyslexia and says he was often bullied.
The JCB Song celebrates how all his troubles disappeared when he was riding in the cab of the big digger with his father Kieron.

The Flash animation music video is truely fantastic (the music video accompanying the song is from the amazing talent at Monkeeyhub ) ! it will make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

I found this wonderful recipe and wanted to share it with you ...
Chocolate + Pistachio Surprise Cake
Gâteau Surprise Chocolat Pistache

you will need...
270 g (2 C) flour
2 tsp baking powder (1 envelope)
1 tsp baking soda
150 g (2/3 C) butter, at room temperature
300 g (1 1/4 C) white sugar
4 eggs
1 1/2 C (3 x 125 ml) plain yogurt or sour cream
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
60 g (1/3 C) chocolate chips
2 Tbsp pistachio paste
60 g (1/3 C) shelled pistachios, chopped
Ganache: -120 g (3 oz) baking dark chocolate -125 ml (1/2 C) whipping cream

Preheat your oven to 180C (360F). Grease a 25-cm (10-inch) cake pan, preferably non-stick with a removable bottom.

Prepare the chocolate batter. In a food processor, mix together half of the sugar and half of the butter until fluffy. Add in two of the eggs, one at a time, mixing between each. Add in half of the yogurts and all the vanilla extract, mix again. In a medium bowl, combine half of the flour with half of the baking powder, half of the baking soda and all of the cocoa mixture. Add the flour mixture into the food processor and mix again until just combined. Pour the batter into the cake pan, and reserve in the refrigerator.

Rinse the bowl of the food processor, and prepare the pistachio batter: mix together the rest of the sugar, the rest of the butter and the pistachio paste. Add in the two last eggs, one at a time, mixing between each. Add in the rest of the yogurts and mix again. In a medium bowl, combine the rest of the flour with the rest of the baking powder and baking soda, and all of the chopped pistachios. Add into the food processor and mix again until just combined.

Take the cake pan out of the fridge, and sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the surface of the chocolate batter. Gently pour the pistachio batter on top, and smooth out the surface with a spatula. Put into the oven to bake for about an hour or until a cake tester comes out clean. Let rest for five minutes on the counter, then turn out on a rack to cool completely.

Prepare the ganache. Melt the dark chocolate with the whipping cream in a double boiler (or in a bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water), stirring with a spoon regularly until completely melted and velvety. Let the ganache rest until it has thickened a bit, about 30 minutes, and frost the cake using a small spoon.

They were trained and choreographed by an expert in animal movement to make them appear to move just like guinea pigs. Halloween Soup (serves six)

Ingredients
• 1 kg fresh pumpkin, peeled, seeded and
cut into small pieces
• 8 cloves garlic, peeled
• 1 large carrot, peeled and cut into small
pieces
• 1 fresh white baguette: half plain bread
chunks with crust removed, half sliced into discs
• 250 g Gruyère, thinly sliced
• A few sprigs of parsley, chopped
• Salt and ground black pepper

Method
• Bring 900 ml of water to the boil.
• Add chopped pumpkin and carrot, one tablespoon
of salt and the peeled garlic; simmer for 30 minutes or until ingredients are
puree-soft.
• Fold in crustless bread chunks and simmer
for four minutes.
• Remove from heat, liquidize in a blender
or pass through a sieve and pour into large round bowls.
• Add chopped parsley and season with salt
and pepper.
• Toast baguette discs, drizzle with olive
oil and cover with slices of Gruyère.
• Melt under grill for a few seconds; float
three on each portion of soup.
• Serve immediately.

It’ll keep you warmer than any trick or treating expedition. And that garlic should keep the vampires at bay.

At the beginning of the birds eye ad we see a little bubble car - a giant green pea, taking a drive around the countryside.

so cute ! and definitely a wonderful addition to any birthday wish list .

But, where can we get this car ? ! According to the daily record , Birds Eye are in talks with car firms with a view to mass-produce the vehicle. A spokesman said: "Although the car made for the advert is a one-off, we have stumbled across something the public aspire to drive."
I know, I do adore this car, but mass-production is not my thing - limited-edition is , so I would rather prefer to keep it as a wish . . .
